Rock and roll legend Chuck Berry has died at his home aged 90.

Chuck Berry was one of rock and roll’s founders and greatest guitarists. He pioneered the genre and thus earned legendary status. John Lennon once said, “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry’”. Some of Berry’s best-loved songs and biggest hits include the classics “Johnny B. Goode” and “Maybellene”, as well as “Roll Over Beethoven” which became a rock and roll staple covered by many bands including The Beatles, ELO and The Sonics. Chuck Berry’s influence has lasted generations; I met a boy of about 15 at a record fair recently who was a huge Chuck Berry fan, plus his music is still inspiring new artists today.

He was due to release his new album, Chuck, this year. The record was announced last October, on Berry’s 90th birthday. It will be his first studio album in 38 years, since 1979’s Rock It. The record was recorded with his long-time backing band, which includes two of his children; his daughter Ingrid plays harmonica and sings, while his son Charles Berry Jr. plays guitar. Berry’s official website has since confirmed that the release will still go ahead, saying that “Chuck had no greater wish than to see this album released to the world”. Further announcements regarding the album are planned for the coming days.

He had dedicated the record to his wife, Themetta, whom he was married to for nearly 70 years. He said in the announcement: “This record is dedicated to my beloved Toddy. My darlin’ I’m growing old! I’ve worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes!”

Messages have been flooding the internet as musicians and fans alike mourn the loss of a rock and roll pioneer who inspired generations, including this touching tribute from Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.

RIP Chuck Berry (October 18 1926 – March 18 2017); one of the last great rock & roll icons and a true pioneer.
