Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham have today released their first single from their upcoming album, titled Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie. The new track, “In My World”, is available now on all digital and streaming services.
A few seconds in, the new song is easily recognisable as a track penned by Buckingham. It has a familiar Fleetwood Mac sound, with a groove and vocals similar to those on “Big Love”, the first single from the band’s 1987 record, Tango In The Night. Although some fans have expressed disappointment at not hearing Christine on the first Buckingham/McVie single, the general reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and the track has led to much excitement for the album’s release. Listen to the new single below.
The new album could be described as being a ‘Fleetwood Mac without Stevie record’, as fellow bandmates Mick Fleetwood and John McVie serve as the rhythm section on the record. Indeed, the songs were initially intended for a Fleetwood Mac album when recording began back in 2014, but it was ultimately decided that the new material would be released as a duet album following Stevie’s decision to focus on her solo career instead of contributing to a new LP with the band. In an interview for Billboard in 2014, it was indicated that parts had been written for Stevie to sing on the new songs, so it’ll be interesting to hear how the tracks have turned out when the album is released later this year.
The original, tentative title of the record was Buckingham McVie. Although this has since been changed, ‘Buckingham McVie’ is still being used as a band name for the duo’s social media pages as well as a contraction of the album title. It’s reminiscent of Buckingham’s early career with Nicks, when they performed as the duo Buckingham Nicks, releasing a self-titled studio album in 1973. Make of that what you will.
In addition to being the first duet album from Fleetwood Mac members since Buckingham Nicks, the new album will mark Christine McVie’s return to the music industry, having not recorded any new material since her 2004 solo album, In the Meantime.
The track list for the new record is as follows, with all songs written by Buckingham and McVie:
