EP Review: Emma Blackery – Magnetised

After months of build up, with song previews and studio footage featuring in her YouTube videos, Emma Blackery’s EP, Magnetised, is finally here. Magnetised is Blackery’s fifth EP release, and she has described it as “the best thing I’ve released”. With its six incredible songs, it certainly lives up to expectations.
First up is “Nothing Without You”, which was released at the EP’s first single last month. With a mixture of elements from Blackery’s new sound and her previous EP, Sucks To Be You, this song works as the bridge between the two EPs to introduce fans into the Magnetised era. This one is guaranteed to get stuck in your head for all the right reasons and is a great opening to the EP. Check out the music video for “Nothing Without You” below.
Next up is “Fixation”, a slower song that keeps with the break-up theme of the EP. There’s a slight glimmer of Paramore shining through and Blackery’s vocals are definitely focalised here. Despite its meaning, “Fixation” is easy to listen to and great for appreciating Blackery’s songwriting talent.
The highlights of the EP are “Instead” and “Don't Come Home”. “Instead” began life as a one-take recording on Blackery’s YouTube channel lasst year and was an instant hit with fans. The version featured on Magnetised has more dimension and depth with the addition of a violin, but is still a mostly acoustic track. Adding anything else to it would have changed the song’s perspective, so leaving it as acoustic was a good decision.
The song I’ve been anticipating the most is “Don't Come Home”. Again, this song was originally uploaded onto Blackery’s YouTube channel, however it was professionally mixed by Arthur Walwin rather than being a one-take recording. The new version on Magnetised has a completely different sound and echoes something Ellie Goulding might release. It has been sped up slightly, with a disco-style drum beat to carry the song along. The two versions sound like different songs and should be treated as such and not compared. This is a very worthy addition to the EP that definitely lived up to the hopes surrounding it. The lyric video for the Magnetised version was released last night.
